This is a wonderful short article... As the Author/Producer of, "Samuel J. Tilden, the Real 19th President,"

I enjoy reading about people that contribute their money and collections to libraries. These are the people that offer us access to free education...and share knowledge otherwise hidden in our history. We need more Americans to contribute and "pay it forward"...as did Samuel J. Tilden, Astor and Lenox when they combined the collections and monies from the Tilden Trust.

I discovered years after researching for the book that if it weren't for savvy and determined men like John Bigelow, Tilden's confidant and one of his estate executors - the NY library may have never been built. Tilden's nephew (encouraged by his creditors) had challenged and broke the will Samuel gave millions to intended for the library. It was a lenghty battle but Bigelow and other Executors, were smart enough to invest the money wisely and earned two millions of dollars to put back into the trust to fulfill Samuel's last wishes to pay it forward to the public...

Libraries offer us a vast treasure chest of history to learn about...so we do not make the same mistakes over and over again...It is what Tilden wanted to gift the generations that followed him..the opportunity to educate ourselves at will.

[...] Deep Linking amasses links to a host of unusual NYPL collections, including one devoted to Shelley and His Circle. I wonder how hard it is to get access. [...]
